Am I too old for Aikido? Do I need to be in good shape to practice?
No. Aikido is for self-improvement and self-defense, appropriate goals for all ages and fitness level. We meet you where you are and scale drills to your ability.
Am I too young for Aikido?
Maybe – while Aikido is for everyone, KoFu does not have a kids’ class. ASU recognizes adult ranks for students starting at 13 years old. KoFu accepts students as young as 10 years old on two conditions: a parent is also on the mat practicing and the student has been approved by the chief instructor after meeting to ensure sufficient maturity.
How do I get started?
Just show up. There is a saying that white belt is the hardest belt to get because most people never get started. Please come observe a class or two any time to make sure Aikido is right for you. Classes are always open to observers. We are located at 12410 Horseshoe, Unit 1 (TriStar Martial Arts), New Lenox, Illinois 60451.
How much does it cost?
KoFu offers a one-month free trial because we want to make sure Aikido is a good fit for you and you are a good fit for the Dojo. After that, it is $75 per month for adult students, with discounts for junior students and additional family members. Once rank is obtained, there is an annual ASU membership fee.
What do I wear?
Wear comfortable clothes – a T-shirt and sweats are perfect to get started. No uniform is required for beginners. Should you wish to pursue Aikido, we can assist you in obtaining an appropriate keikogi (practice uniform).
